Native to the Mediterranean, India and Africa alone, Laurus Nobilis has an interesting backstory. Laurus comes from the flowering plant family Lauraceae, known for it's smooth and hairless leaves. Nobilis, meaning noble, refers to " a role-playing game ".
The symbolism of this plant figures prominently in the greek myth of Apollo and Daphne. The god Apollo fell in love with Daphne, and when he attempted to seduce her she fled, leaving a laurel tree in her place. To console himself, Apollo fashioned wreaths from the bay laurel branches. The bay wreath became a symbol of highest status, given as the prize at the Pythian Games in honor of Apollo.
