Behind the Scenes #5 with Twenty20 Skincare

It's time for another Behind the Scenes segment!

This week, I got to speak with Elena of Twenty20 Skincare. Elena makes the most luxurious body butters using Fair-Trade shea butter from Ghana. I actually purchased a jar of this body butter earlier in the year after seeing it pop up on my Instagram. My partner and I both have eczema and have tried SO many different products. This shea butter takes the cake though. It's been a total game changer! I knew I had to add Twenty20 Skincare to the shop! Not only are these butters free from preservatives, dyes, synthetic ingredients, fillers, perfumes, emulsifiers, toxins, parabens, petroleum products, and stabilizers, they're also made in Canada and packaged in 100% recyclable materials (glass and metal).

There are currently four different shea butters available in the shop including Eucalyptus Mint, Sweet Orange, Lavender, and Hibiscus Rose. You can use them all over your body including your face since they're non comedogenic. I even use this shea butter to tame my frizzy, dry hair!

Now, on to the Behind the Scenes!

Q: What is Twenty20 Skincare all about and how did you get started?

Twenty20 Skincare™ is an all-natural skincare company with products made with Shea Butter from Ghana. In 2013, I visited my Grandma’s home in Ghana and discovered the many benefits of using Shea Butter. Having spent years struggling to find products that worked for my dry and eczema prone skin, I decided to start making my own skincare products and shifted to using all-natural products in my routine. For the past seven years I have been making and formulating essential concoctions for my friends and family. Fast forward to 2019, with encouragement from my loved ones, I officially started my business.

Q: What is the story behind the name?

The name Twenty20 Skincare™ originates from a 1995 document published by the Ghanaian government titled “Vision 2020”. I sampled a few names before deciding on this one but ultimately landed on Twenty20. The idea of Vision 2020 is to stimulate socio-economic development for Ghanaians. Through my company’s purchase of fair trade Shea Butter, we enable women in the Shea supply chain to improve their living and working conditions. My goal is to create a full line of products that are made with Shea Butter.

Twenty20 Skincare is my “why” reminder. In seeing the name I remember why I do what I do, and stay true to my vision: delivering simple and clear products that enable well-being and nourish the Earth.

Q: Where are your products made and who makes them?

All our products are made by me (Elena) in Ottawa. I have formulated every product with care and craft them all by hand. Recently, I expanded my team so production is aided by two wonderful ladies: Stephanie & Deborah.

Q: Is there any advice you'd give to people starting out with their own businesses?

Let me start by saying that I started a year ago, so the advice that I would give to myself a year ago would be:

          • Do your research and then just go for it. Don’t worry so much about how everything will work out. As you go you’ll figure it out.

          • Get a business bank account! Try not to mix your personal finances with your business finances. Keep them separate.

          • What’s obvious to you, is not obvious to everyone else. Don’t underestimate the value you bring to the market and others.

          • Write out a business plan. Write down your visions and goals in plain language.

Q: Is there anything you wish you had known when you were starting out?

One thing I wish I had known was how fun this was going to be! I’ve met so many great people, networked with different businesses, made money and worked so hard. I love this journey and all the growth I have experienced.

Thank you for following along on these Behind the Scenes posts! And a big shout out to Elena for taking the time to speak with Kinsfolk Shop and for making such an awesome product! Stay tuned for next week's instalment!
