2020 Gift Guide
It's that time of year again! I didn't release a gift guide in previous years but I get quite a few requests, so here's the first one!
I wanted this curated guide to be filled with ultra practical and functional things as well as some inspiration for those that might be new to low-waste living or even those that are hard to shop for.
If you're shopping with Kinsfolk Shop for the holidays, THANK YOU! And to show my appreciation, gift wrapping is free! Simple kraft paper with flax twine (in various colours). Just leave a note a check out that you'd like your order gift wrapped as well as what you'd like written on the gift tag. If you'd like to add on a greeting card as well, I can fill it out on your behalf.
Now for my favourite recommendations this season!
You may have noticed two new categories in the header menu of the shop. Gifts under $10 and Gifts under $25. I don't know about you, but budgeting for gifts has been tough this year and I wanted to highlight some great products that are an excellent value! Things you'll find here are festive sponge cloths and tea towels, locally crafted hand soaps and candles, bamboo cooking utensils, handmade greeting cards, and lots more!
For the Foodie
If you're searching for the perfect gift for the foodie, baker or chef in your life, one of my favourite kitchen tools is the Book Stand from Redecker. This book stand is made from solid beechwood and is ideal for propping up cookbooks and tablets and folds flat when not in use for easy storage.
I also love these new Gift Sets from Ten & Co! Festive and functional...each set comes with 1 sponge cloth and 1 matching tea towel. Sponge cloths are a staple in Swedish households. Each cloth replaces about 17 rolls of paper towel and can be used to clean glass, stainless steel, granite, etc. These cloths are made from cellulose and cotton 100% compostable too once they wear out.
The tea towels are a mid-weight cotton/linen blend and get softer and more absorbent the more they are washed. Different sets available!
Bambu makes quite the range of cooking utensils and tools! They're responsibly made by skilled artisans in China (read the full behind the scenes here) from 100% USDA certified organic bamboo. Bambu is a 1% for the Planet member as well as a Certified B Corp, putting people and the planet first.
Bamboo is more resilient and durable than wood, and won't scratch cooking surfaces. They're a great alternative to plastic utensils and in the event that they break or wear out, they're 100% biodegradable since they're finished with only linseed oil. No glues, lacquers, or paint.
For Coffee and Tea Drinkers
I'm a HUGE coffee drinker! I've tried quite a few travel mugs in search of the best ones and these are my favourite! Easy to clean, double walled, virtually indestructible AND they come with a lifetime warranty. Plus they're made by a Certified B Corp and 1% for the Planet member. MiiR cups are hands down my top recommendation.
And if they want to elevate their coffee or tea game, they might want to try out reusable filters! These are made in Canada from organic cotton and hemp and last up to a year with regular use. They're super easy to care for too! Just rinse and let dry...if build up accumulates, boil in water for a few minutes. Different sizes available for different brewing methods...we even carry nut/oat milk filters!
For the Homebody
We're all homebodies this year it seems but if you're looking for something to bring a little relaxation and coziness to someone in your life, you might like these options!
Ontario-made artisanal bath salts made with pure essential oils and plant-based ingredients. Everything is vegan-friendly and free from synthetics, perfumes and preservatives. Available in 250ml or 500ml sizes.
Candles are always a great gift idea! These are one of my favourite products in the shop currently! Made a blend of soy and coconut wax, they're phthalate-free and paraffin-free. Plus they have FSC certified wood wicks which, when burning, sound like your own mini campfire.
These soaps from Tili are a recent addition to Kinsfolk Shop. Vegan and palm oil-free, they're made in Toronto and inspired by Scotland. No artificial colours or fragrances. Made in small batches, these soaps would make a great gift for just about anybody (especially this year).
This is a super fun activity for kids of all ages. A colour-your-own tote bag made in Quebec from 100% organic cotton. This can be coloured with washable markers, pencil crayons, or for something more permanent, fabric paint, acrylic paints, etc. Or just leave it blank! It's kid sized and a fun way to get them involved with grocery shopping.
For the House Plant Enthusiasts
These are brand new to the shop! Macrame plant hangers made here in Ontario from 100% cotton. All the boho-vibes! They're the perfect fit for 4-5" planters and come in two different styles...either with natural, wooden beads, or multi-coloured string.
A Non-Expert's, Self Taught Guide to Avoid Slaughtering Most Common Houseplants. This is a realistic guide to caring for some of the most common houseplants. Designed and printed on recycled paper here in Guelph but local artist Amber Ozols from Homebody Paper. This would make a great accompaniment to a gifted house plant.
For Those That Are Hard to Shop For
If you're stumped for a gift, here's a few ideas that might inspire you! All Canadian made too!
First Aid Pouches are a practical option! Fill them with different things to make the ultimate gift! Baby supplies for new parents, chocolate for those with a sweet tooth, make up, art supplies, or just leave them as-is! Different colours and sizes available. Made in Toronto from 100% organic cotton.
This might be something that you haven't thought about gifting, but I know I'd be happy to get one of these! It's one of those things that you didn't really know you needed until you got one. Hot & Cold compresses made in Quebec from hemp/cotton fabric and filled with organic, Canadian pearl barely. Different styles available as well as additional covers to keep the compresses clean and dust bags for storage.
Another cool option are safety razor kits! These razors are made here in Canada from solid brass. They're built to last a lifetime and with blades a fraction of the cost of regular cartridge blades, the savings add up quickly! The kits come in a wood gift box and include shaving oil, an exfoliating cloth, a pack of blades, and a razor in your choice of Matte Black, Dusty Rose, or Cream, plus a how-to guide.
These are new DIY kits from Toronto-based Make This Universe. There are 4 different scents available to choose from and each kit comes with everything you need to make your own own 4 oz candle!
These kits are more than just a candle too...learn a new skill, or spark a potential new hobby!
And last, but not least, if you're searching for a little bit of everything, Kinsfolk Shop released a curated gift box of all Canadian, women-owned businesses. There are 3 variations to choose from and these boxes will be shipping out the third week of November! Very limited stock of each box available. These boxes are $15 off the retail price and once they're sold out, they're sold out! Each box will include a sponge cloth, organic cotton tea towel, wood wick candle, lip butter tin, oak wood soap dish, botanical bar soap, and a sugar scrub.
